The situation
A consulting seat at a small public company that said its technology improved how oil moves through pipelines. The seat paid in equity, and I helped the company raise money.
Public, thinly traded, and telling a technical story that could not be checked from a filing. It needed capital, and it needed people outside the company to believe the claim.
A way to test the claim from close range: inside the company, next to the people making it, asking the questions a pipeline operator would ask before paying for it.
Take the seat rather than read the company from a distance through its filings, treat the access as the point, and judge the company on what an operator would pay for, never on what the release said.
About $3M raised for the company with my help, and the method that came out of the seat: five questions, asked from inside, that I would put to any hard technical claim today.
